Patton Electronics' 2089 is a high-speed EIA-574 (RS-232 on a DB-9) to RS-485 serial converter. It supports asynchronous data rates up to 115.2 kbps over one or two unconditioned twisted-pair wires. Internal surge protection withstands harmful data line transients and protects connected equipment. External power is not required as it operates from signal power.

The 2089 handles up to 50 terminal drops in a multipoint polling environment. For RS-485 applications requiring hardware handshaking, it passes one control signal in each direction. Five configuration parameters allow the unit to be finetuned for a variety of point-to-point or multipoint applications. It may be configured for high or low impedance, the carrier may be set to “constantly on” or “controlled by RTS”, and the unit can operate with or without “echo”. RTS/CTS line delay may be set for 0 or 8 mS. Distances to 15 miles are attainable at lower data rates (1.2 Kbps, 19 AWG twisted pair). Options for twisted pair connection include terminal blocks with strain relief, RJ11 or RJ45.
